The Supporting Armed Forces in Acute Hospital Settings programme was jointly funded by the Covenant Fund (through the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust) and NHS England and NHS Improvement. Grants of up to £120,000 for two-year projects were available.

Applications were open to hospitals which could show that they had already worked with others to improve support for veterans who access their services. Grants of up to £120,000 for two-year projects were available.

Eligible hospitals could apply for a grant for a project that would focus on improving support to veterans who are receiving treatment as an inpatient within their hospital. This would involve having an Armed Forces Advocate to provide additional support and co-ordination with services and armed forces charities; and make other improvements that would benefit the armed forces community. This project would be in addition to any existing support provided by the hospital.

Priority was given to projects in hospitals likely to receive higher numbers of veterans (and other members of the armed forces community) for treatment, or that serve a particularly high number in terms of age range or service background.
