Understanding the impact of our funding
Whether it’s an evaluation we’ve completed of a grant programme, an academic study being supported by a grant award or a piece of research we’ve commissioned to better understand an emerging issue for the armed forces community – this is where you’ll find all of our work to inform and learn from our grantmaking, and to help spread what works.
As a public funder, every programme we run is essentially part of a huge action research project on behalf of the Ministry of Defence: identifying unique needs, testing solutions, working out how to scale them to reach more people and making sure that learning goes back into government – to inform policy to help prevent other needs from arising in future.
Our evidence and gaps map
Commissioned in 2026 to inform our strategy for 2027-2030, this map allows you to navigate research on the UK Armed Forces community published between 2016 and 2026. Evidence is organised by population group (rows) and topic (columns). Each cell contains coloured bubbles indicating the volume and type of available research, making it easy to see at a glance where evidence exists and where gaps remain.
The map draws on data from the Research and Policy Repository maintained by the Centre for Evidence for the Armed Forces Community. Evidence on the map has been catalogued following the repository.
