Behind every veteran, serving person and family who reaches out for help, there’s an organisation committed to being there when it matters. Through the Rise programme, we’re investing over £348,000 in 12 charities and community organisations across the UK to help them strengthen their long term sustainability.
Why the Rise programme matters
The Rise is a pilot programme is designed to help small and medium armed forces charities become stronger, more resilient and better prepared for the future, in an increasingly complex operating environment.
Things in the charity sector move fast, with organisations often having to grow and change to meet the needs of their beneficiaries, leaving little time to plan. Rise gives charities time and support to step back and take stock to improve how they work. This could include reviewing governance, planning for the future, measuring impact, improving finances, or working more closely with other armed forces charities.
By creating vital space for reflection and development, the programme is aiming to help charities become more resilient, adaptable and better equipped to meet the evolving needs of members of the armed forces community in need of special consideration — people and families who have given the most through service.
Latest awards
We’ve awarded 12 organisations grants of up to £30,000, to strengthen leadership, improve systems and processes, and enable more sustainable ways of working.

This funding will allow these organisations to:
- strengthen their leadership and oversight, to help them make confident decisions
- take time to think ahead and put clear, long term plans in place
- better understand and show the difference their work makes for the people they support
- find new and more sustainable ways to fund their work, reducing reliance on a single income source
- improve the tools and systems they use every day, helping teams work more effectively and safely.
These awards will help organisations build strong foundations – so they can continue delivering reliable, high quality support to the armed forces community for years to come.
Building resilience for the future
By investing in planning, leadership and organisational development, the RISE programme is exploring the role it can play in helping organisations move away from reactive, short term approaches. Our research partners will be helping us to evaluate the impact of these grants to understand how they enable the availability of support for the armed forces community in future.
