Catterick Garrison Preschool’s Picture, Smiles and Giggles project, which received funding under the Early Years programme, set out a clear vision to create a nurturing space where the children, including babies up to two years old and those children with SEND could thrive.
When the pre-school opened its doors, it was clear that the demand for places would quickly exceed capacity. Families with children who had special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) were eager to find a nurturing environment where their children could thrive. With the individual needs of the children already enrolled, the pre-school was unable to accept more children. Now, the pre-school has the chance to expand its reach and provide much needed support to even more children who deserve the same opportunities.
The project wasn’t just about creating a sensory-based classroom, it was also about equipping the staff with specialist training, ensuring they had the skills and confidence to provide tailored support that would make a real difference in the lives of the children. With this goal in mind, the project aimed to create an environment where every child, regardless of their abilities could feel valued and supported.

We know the impact will make a positive change to the lives of our youngest children and those children with challenges in their learning and development. All staff have received learning and development training focused on SEND to support children as they transition in and around our nursery.”

Since receiving the grant in February 2024, the pre-school has made progress.
Over the autumn term, they welcomed 14 new children, giving more families access to the support their children need. The funding also allowed the pre-school to invest in new resources, carefully chosen to match the children’s interest and stages of development.
The sensory classroom has become a sanctuary where children can immerse themselves in a world of discovery. With pop up toys, an electronic bubble machine, and soothing-coloured lights, the space offers a haven where children can reset their minds and engage in a full sensory experience.
