Veteran support in the heart of Derbyshire
Parwich Royal British Legion Club has become one of the first groups to receive funding from the Veterans’ Community Centres (VCC) Programme.
Based in the vibrant village of Parwich, in the heart of Derbyshire within the Peak District, the club was formed just after the Second World War, quickly becoming an essential community hub.
With its history steeped in the Service community, it’s no surprise that both veterans and those still serving remain active in the club’s administration and activities, and provide volunteer support.
Sustaining a community resource
The club received just under £4,000 from the VCC Programme for electrical and building repairs. Committee member Jon Micklefield said:
“The club is a great place to socialise and can be relied upon to provide familiar faces, a friendly welcome and someone to chat to. As well as sustaining the building for the benefit of everyone, [the funding] will enable us to improve accessibility for our ageing veterans.”
Speaking of the group’s experience of applying for funding, Jon added:
“The online process of applying was intuitive and easy to use. I’d definitely recommend other similar clubs to pursue funding for their own needs.”
Bringing the community together
As with many veterans’ clubs, it is vital that these spaces are maintained. Like many similar clubs, Parwich Royal British Legion Club offers an array of activities to bring the community together such as quizzes, live music, BBQs and much more.
The Veterans’ Community Centres Programme
The VCC Programme seeks to support these clubs and secure the future of veterans’ community centres and the valuable support they offer.
Do you know of a place where veterans in your area meet up regularly – perhaps for a brew or a drink with friends?
The VCC Programme offers grants of up to £30,000 for refurb and renovation works. Eligibility rules apply, check out the programme guidance.
