£4.5 million awarded to support veterans’ housing

November 3, 2025

  • 19 organisations to receive a share of £4.5 million under the Veterans’ Capital Housing Fund.
  • These projects will provide new builds and significant refurbishment of rental accommodation offering high quality support for veterans with a housing need.

19 organisations will share £4.5 million thanks to funding from the Office for Veterans’ Affairs’ Veterans’ Capital Housing Fund. The awards cover England, Scotland and Wales and contribute to the Government’s ambition to reduce veteran homelessness and end rough sleeping.

Nine grants are awarded under the Major Capital Grants programme, which supports new build accommodation and significant refurbishment and extension of accommodation for veterans. A further 10 supplementary grants are awarded to existing projects. These latest awards bring the total awarded through this programme to over £12.5 million.

A pathway to affordable housing

In Cornwall, the Lest We Forget Association have been awarded £500,000 to build new quality affordable homes for veterans and their families to rent, with a future option to purchase under a shared ownership agreement, enabling veterans on the housing market.

Rental costs in this region are typically very high – these houses will have significantly lower rent making them more accessible to service families who often are unable meet the higher rental cost. By building houses on a development, Lest We Forget Association will also create a community offering support for those who live there. There will be potential for veterans not only be involved with the build process but also to be either directly employed or given employment support in Cornwall.

Shaun Pascoe, Chair of Trustees at Lest We Forget Association explains:

“We are extremely excited by and grateful for the impact this grant will have on those we support. Investing in housing provides a vital foundation of stability for veterans and their families, who often face distinct challenges as they transition to civilian life—including disability, trauma, and financial hardship.

“We believe that access to social housing is a key part of our commitment to those who have served. It not only offers a pathway to secure affordable homes but also serves as a crucial support system, helping veterans build a financially stable future.”

Long term community support

Awarded £500,000, The VC Gallery will create affordable, sustainable housing for veterans in Pembrokeshire, tackling homelessness and offering long-term support. With veteran input, the development will feature energy-efficient homes and access to mental health, employment, and social services – supporting community integration and empowering independent, stable lives.

This development will offer veterans safe, warm, and stable homes where they can regain independence and be part of a supportive community, creating a pathway from crisis to stability. This project will reduce homelessness by providing safe housing and integrated support, while also tackling the self-isolation that prevents many veterans from engaging with mainstream services.

Barry John MBE, CEO at The VC Gallery told us:

“This Major Capital Grant means we can finally turn our vision of dedicated veterans’ housing into reality. These new flats will provide a safe and supportive place for those who have served, helping them to rebuild their lives and stay connected to a community that understands them. It’s more than just bricks and mortar – it’s about dignity, stability, and belonging for those who’ve given so much.”

Safety first in Scotland

Scottish Veterans Residences are awarded £240,000 to ensure fire safety at the charity’s sites in Edinburgh and Dundee. The sites are occupied by 150 veterans (129 who are classed as homeless).

Debra, a resident at Whitefoord House in Edinburgh shares the positive impact living there has had on her life:

“I am a proud Veteran, having served in the Wrens for four years between 1976 and 1980. Supported by Scottish Veterans Residences, I moved into Whitefoord House in Edinburgh in August 2024.

“I get a lot of support and help whenever I need it. My support worker (also Debbie) helped to get me registered with a GP and dentist and also helped me with Housing Benefit for my rent, as well as other relevant benefits that I am entitled to.

“I first heard about Whitefoord House though a work colleague, who knew someone who had stayed at the Veterans Residence and had enjoyed a very positive experience. For me, it’s been the same and I am grateful to have found SVR.

“There is always a member of staff available if I have a problem, or I need help. The room is equipped with a pull cord if I need assistance. We are supplied with three meals a day, the food is lovely, and the catering team are friendly and helpful. There is also a laundry service, which I use weekly, and there is an Activities Officer onsite, who helps organise a wide range of things to do for the residents here. I am so grateful and happy to have found Whitefoord House.”

More than just a home

The impact of these awards extends beyond just providing safe, secure homes to veterans in need – it’s also about building supportive communities and empowering independent lives.

Speaking during a visit to The Stoll Foundation’s Kings Road Park development in Fulham on 30 October 2025, Minister for Veterans and People, Louise Sandher-Jones MP, said:

“Every veteran deserves a safe, secure place to call home. That’s not just a moral obligation – it’s a promise this Government is determined to keep. Today marks another significant step towards delivering the Prime Minister’s pledge to provide homes fit for our heroes across the United Kingdom.

“We’re delivering real change through the Veterans’ Capital Housing Fund and it was fantastic to see first-hand how these homes are providing veterans and their families with the security and support they need.”

Anna Wright, Chief Executive of the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust, explains:

“These awards will provide more than just homes – they’re offering a lifeline of support and stability to veterans and their families when they need it the most, helping to set them on a pathway to a more positive future.”
