Learning From Local Authority Projects : External Engagement

This external engagement section provides guidance on delivering help at a more local level. Signposting, outreach and community engagement are the main areas of focus. The majority of materials are centred around direct contact with the Armed Forces Community, with examples of single points of contact, Veterans Hubs and a large array of unique practices that have been collected from different Local Authorities.

The repository was designed so that future work on the Armed Forces Covenant would develop rather than duplicate anything that has been created previously. This section will therefore provide processes or methods that can be used in your local authority with minor tweaks.

Resource type 1 – Resource Directory

A resource library which provides comprehensive contact information and descriptions for a variety of   nationwide services that covers major policy areas.

A Resource Directory produced to help raise awareness of the Service Pupil Premium in West Yorkshire schools. The directory pulls together a range of resources that are already available into one place.

Resource type 2 – Leaflets, flyers & posters

A leaflet containing helpful information about the Armed Forces Covenant and providing contact details for Local Authorities and useful services and organisations.

A leaflet covering financial support available to those in Cardiff. Armed Forces Community specific support can be found on page 14.

Digital ‘what’s on’ poster of VE Day activities and events available through the Solent partnership. All events and activities are at-home or virtually delivered.

The Greater Manchester Forces directory makes it easier to find local services, view company and organisation locations, visit the website and link with any of the major social network pages – all from one place. It is also available from any internet device; mobile, tablet, desktop or smartTV.

A booklet of resources and contacts details for the Armed Forces Community covering subjects such as housing, health and many more, in the five local authorities of Gwent, Wales.

Resource type 2 – News Issue

An example of a Newsletter (Issue 1) summarising the work being done across the Wales to deliver the Armed Forces Covenant. It includes short news stories about specifics services, activities, contact information and resources.

Other resources

A festival agenda to raise awareness around Armed Forces activity in Neath Port Talbot. Includes performances and commemorations.

A guide to help  people who are looking to provide support for our local veterans and ex-service personnel through local groups, hubs or drop-ins, or are looking to grow or enhance what they are already providing.

A manual that has been developed alongside the above ‘Grow your Hub Guide’ and contains additional information, links and templates which may be useful to you if you are considering expanding and growing your hub or drop-in

Materials in this section will have information highly specific to the authority that produced it. Some work will be needed to adapt the material to tailor it to local need but much of the information may still be useful to all authorities.

Resource type 2 – Leaflet

A double-sided pocket card with National helpline contact information as well as information on local support available in Worcestershire.

A booklet guide to what support is available for Veterans and Servicemen and women and their families in Cardiff that covers multiple policy areas.

Resource type 3 – News issue

An example news issue that contains short news stories about activity in Lancashire as well as contact information for local Armed Forces champions.

Other Resources

The Greater Manchester Combined Authority have produced a detailed online book which displays a guide to Armed Forces Covenant delivery across the region.

This short animated film is the first in a series which aims to highlight the support available to members of the Armed Forces community across Greater Manchester.

A comprehensive report of the work being done across London’s ‘Renewing the Covenant in Capital’ project that includes detail on needs, findings, best practice in four policy areas and key recommendations.

This section will focus on work that has been done that is judged to have been selected on clarity and accessibility in this area of work. This will provide examples to inspire new ideas for local authorities as well as providing benchmark examples of specific practices.
