The Fighting Chance – Off the Canvas
In February 2024, The Fighting Chance received a grant of £15,000 for their project ‘Off the Canvas’ – a boxing training outreach programme tailored for older Veterans.
Adapted for all abilities and capabilities, it’s an introduction to boxing training, a chance to get involved in days out with fun activities and an opportunity for Veterans to meet.
Designed to accommodate all abilities, the programme introduces participants to boxing training while adapting social interaction through fun activities and events. It provides Veterans with a welcoming space to connect, build friendships, and engage socially.
Delivered in partnership with Royal Hospital Chelsea Pensioners Veterans’ Outreach Team, the pilot aims to tackle loneliness and social isolation by encouraging Veterans to participate in physical activities and outreach events. The programme also evaluates how these activities can enhance social connections, engagement, and access to support networks.
Key achievements to date
The project has been running for since April 2024 and has made significant progress.
Participants have reported positive outcomes, including increased enjoyment, improved mood, and enhanced social connections. Indoor and outdoor boxing sessions have been held at Royal Hospital Chelsea, complemented by visits to boxing gyms. These visits, organised with the Royal Hospital Chelsea outreach team, provided opportunities for training, meeting other Veterans, and participating in social activities.
The programme has successfully engaged individuals across a range of ages and physical abilities, including those with long-term physical conditions, restricted mobility, and wheelchair users.
Feedback highlights improvements in general health, mood, and physical fitness:
“This is the first time this year I’ve felt my endorphins”
“I am absolutely loving it! It’s made a big difference to my life”.
“I am not getting out of breath on the stairs as much as I used to”
An inclusive and engaging environment
The project has demonstrated significant progress in improving the physical and mental wellbeing of older Veterans. By providing an inclusive and engaging environment, it has empowered participants of all abilities to re-connect with others and experience meaningful benefits.
Director of The Fighting Chance, Imran Khalil concludes on the progress made of the project:
We’re proud to be partnering with Royal Hospital Chelsea on this collaborative project. It’s fantastic to see how the hospital residents and Veterans from the wider area have enjoyed the boxing training and taking part in outreach activities.
We’ve shown boxing is for everyone regardless of age, ability and physical capability.
We hope to build on this work and continue our relationship with Royal Hospital Chelsea.
